Michael B Jordan is no stranger to superhero films, having appeared in the critically and commercially successful Black Panther and Chronicle. He was also in the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot, which was neither, but don't hold that against him.
Now he is joining the Worlds of DC franchise for Static Shock, about a Black teenager named Virgil Hawkins who gets electricity-themed superpowers in an incident, and becomes a hero who has worked with the Teen Titans and the Justice League at various times.

As revealed in The Hollywood Reporter, Michael will be serving as a producer on the previously-announced film, throwing the weight of his credibility behind the project.
In a statement to the outlet, the actor stated: 'I'm proud to be a part of building a new universe centred around Black superheroes; our community deserves that.
'[Production company] Outlier Society is committed to bringing to life diverse comic book content across all platforms and we are excited to partner with [fellow producer Reginald Hudlin] and Warner Bros on this initial step.'
As well as being a Hollywood producer, Reginald Hudlin is also a comic book writer who did a run on Black Panther in the 2000s, and was responsible for the issues in which the titular character married X-Men's Storm.

Static as a superhero is perhaps best known for the animated series Static Shock, which was part of the DC Animated Universe that also included Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League. For a show aimed at kids, it dealt with some mature themes, and its success proved that people were just as interested in a Black superhero as a white one.
The next Worlds of DC film to release is Wonder Woman 1984, which is set to come out on Christmas Day, but director Patty Jenkins isn't convinced it won't be delayed into 2021.
