What is considered perhaps Black Uhuru's greatest contribution to roots, 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner,' was almost lost in the shuffle. By 1980, the trio had garnered enough attention to sign an international deal with the Island label. Their debut album for the label was Sinsemilla, and the title track was duly spun off as a single. Amazingly, Island decided to virtually bury 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner' on the B-side of the 12' version. Back home in Jamaica, it was another story. There, people were already familiar with the song from its original incarnation as a 1972 Michael Rose solo single. Produced by Niney Holness, that version was an almost entirely different entity, even if the melody and lyrics remained the same. The re-recording was a Sly & Robbie masterpiece powered by a rhythm heavier than an elephant and a blur of percussive beats. The song has an awesome dread atmosphere featuring the Revolutionaries mired so deep in roots, it's a wonder they ever pulled themselves free, while its companion dub spun an even thicker mood around the grooves. Just why Natty's appearance for dinner should be met with such overwhelming foreboding is a moot point; his arrival virtually defined the dread sound -- dark, moody, with a pulsing beat that flattened all in its path. Released as a single in 1978, the following year it was included on the Showcase album which compiled a clutch of the group's singles, with their dubs appended. The album, retitled Black Uhuru, was licensed by the tiny U.K. independent label Butt in 1980, and then by Virgin the following year. At that point, 'Dinner,' having languished as a B-side, swiftly gained classic status.
